Experts Expect about 550 kg/0.1 ha
from New Grain Harvest
in Dobrich Region

General Toshevo, Northeastern Bulgaria, June 8 (BTA) - The average yield in the new grain harvest in Bulgaria's northeastern Dobrich region will reach 500-550 kg per 0.1 ha, Prof. Ivan Kiryakov, head of the Dobroudzha Agricultural Institute's section responsible for selection of cereals and legumes said. The unit presented over 40 varieties of wheat, barley and triticale at an open day for scientists and grain producers.

After the snowy winter the soil has enough water and there are nearly no problems with plant diseases and disorders. The harvest will not be worse than last year's when the largest amount of grain in the last ten years was gathered, Kiryakov said. This year there are over 120,000 ha under wheat.

More than 5,000,000 tonnes of wheat are expected to be harvested in the country. In Southern Bulgaria the harvest will reach about 400 kg/0.1 ha and in Dobroudzha - 500-600 kg, Prof. Nikolai Tsenov, who has selected a number of Bulgarian varieties, forecast.

Regretably, Bulgarian wheat varieties are sown more rarely, the head of the Dobroudzha Agricultural Institute, Assoc. Prof. Iliya Iliev said. According to Kiryakov, Bulgarian varieties are used in not more than 30 per cent of the fields under wheat in this country. Usually, foreign varieties are used. They give a higher yield but do not have the baking qualities of Bulgarian wheat. The balance is disrupted because of the small difference in the purchase price of fodder and bread grain./PK/BR
