site.btaBulgarian Socialist Party MP Stoynev: Bulgaria Needs Statesmen, Not Loud Politicians
Bulgaria needs statesmen, not loud politicians, BSP – United Left MP Dragomir Stoynev said in Parliament on Thursday during the debate on the Zhelyazkov cabinet, of which BSP – United Left is a part.
Stoynev noted that this is an important day for all Bulgarians, including those who refuse to be part of the political consensus.
Stoynev stated that the most dangerous issue right now is the political shortsightedness shown by the opposition. It's a great paradox, he noted, to talk about the need for change while holding on to the status quo, not realizing that the political crisis has become the status quo, causing the State to stagnate. "It is our responsibility to overcome this status quo. We believe Bulgaria needs not just normal but accelerated development."
By refusing to support the government, the opposition aligns with those who want new elections, Stoynev added.
"You must understand, colleagues, two important lessons: politics should be conducted with the common good and the State in mind, not based on business principles, which focus on short-term gains and specific profits," he added. "You do not have expertise and managerial experience that surpass the combined potential of the parties in this government."
He said the parties supporting the government have demonstrated the will and determination to show what it means to emerge from this difficult situation. This government will be much more transparent than any "patchwork coalitions" [the GERB-UDF and Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria coalition government of 2023], because it will be committed to implementing a specific management programme, restraint, and that BSP – United Left will be a guarantor of this mutual restraint.
"Democratic Bulgaria at least had the courage to sit at the negotiating table, and we accepted all their priorities," Stoynev said. "Continue the Change, you have a huge deficit that I hope you will make up for; you lack state responsibility towards everything we call the national interest," Stoynev said, addressing the coalition partner of Democratic Bulgaria.
He added Vazrazhdane is at the other extreme—misunderstanding and denial of realities, primitive populism, and aggression do not lead to the nation's prosperity.
"Movement for Rights and Freedoms-New Beginning wants to expand its influence over a specific political segment, leading to extreme confrontation," Stoynev added.
"On one side, we have confrontation; on the other, a coalition seeking balance," he summarized.
He emphasised the need for balance over confrontation, calling for a sensible approach to address the economic, demographic, social, and spiritual crisis.
