Hauliers Satisfied
with Measures Easing Traffic
at Kulata Checkpoint

Kulata Border Checkpoint, May 29 (BTA) - Hauliers and truck drivers are satisfied with the measures taken by the state bodies to ease traffic through the Kulata checkpoint on Bulgaria's border with Greece. They had gathered here on Monday after the Union of Transport Workers announced it was ready to protest at the long waiting times at this country's border checkpoint with the heaviest traffic.

At this point, traffic is normal and there is no tailback of trucks.

This was announced by Alexander Stamboliiski, deputy leader of the Union of Bulgarian Transport Workers, after Monday's talks at Kulata with Blagoevgrad Regional Governor Bisser Mihailov and the heads of the Regional Directorate of the Interior, of the Border Police Regional Directorate, and of the South-West Customs Directorate, among others. Talks were also held with representatives of the Greek authorities.

Stamboliiski said: "Our demands have been met, except those which will take some time to implement. The staff at the checkpoint have been instructed how to avoid tailbacks. The Greek authorities will need a few days to prepare new lanes, and the Promachonas checkpoint on their side of the border will become fully operative after June 10."

A centre for round-the-clock communication and rapid reaction will be set up to deal with problems as they arise. Stamboliiski said that the protest will not continue for now but the drivers will remain ready to stage protests if the agreed measures fail to be implemented.

Last week truck drivers did not rule out blocking the Kulata checkpoint. PK/DD
