GERB Deputy Chairman Tsvetanov: Early Parliamentary Elections Not Useful for Country

Varna, on the Black Sea, January 25 (BTA) - Early parliamentary elections are not useful for this country, GERB Deputy Chairman and floor leader Tsvetan Tsvetanov said here on Sunday. Tsvetanov also said he did not believe snap elections in 2016 are likely.

In Tsvetanov's words, early elections would mean that Bulgaria is in crisis. This will also hamper the successful coping with the challenges in the new programming period, he said, adding that GERB will continue to keep the stability in the country and pursue real policies.

Tsvetanov described as "untenable" recent statements about the relations between GERB and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) of Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) leader Radam Kanev. In a TV broadcast on Sunday Kanev said that "An attempt was made to plot against DSB when, in connection with the preparation of a motion of no confidence in the government, MRF allegedly approached GERB with the question what formulation the Movement could sign, and were told, 'no in respect of security and internal order, yes in respect of healthcare'. The aim was to put the DSB in a tight spot."

Tsvetanov said that "There are certain red lines in politics which Mr Kanev has crossed with his conduct". In Tsvetanov's words, the vote of no confidence is entirely an initiative and outcome of talks between the Bulgarian Socialist Party, MRF and other opposition formations.

Dwelling on possible changes in the cabinet, Tsvetanov said that Prime Minister Boyko Borissov backs every single minister and every policy that is being implemented.

Tsvetanov also said that GERB's nomination for presidential runner will be announced in May or June. In a newspaper interview during the weekend, President Rosen Plevneliev said that he will announce whether he will run for a second term in the summer. At the last presidential elections Plevneliev was elected on GERB's ticket.
