PM Borissov: There Are Boundaries in History Which Should Not Be Overstepped

Sofia, February 5 (BTA) - Prime Minister Boyko Borissov on Friday met with representatives of protesters against attempts to rewrite history.

In recent weeks a series of scandals and protests against the draft curricula for school subjects, particularly for history lessons that present the structure of the Ottoman Empire and talk about Bulgarians' "coexistence" within it, instead of "yoke" prompted Borissov to demand the resignation of Education Minister Todor Tanev.

After the meeting, Karlovo deputy mayor Stoyko Karagemnski said that protesters familiarized the Prime Minister with a sign-in campaign in towns such as Karlovo, Sopot, Koprivshtitsa and Kalofer which led the 19th century Bulgarian National Revival and across the country. Karagenski quoted Borissov as pledging to vouchsafe that there are boundaries in Bulgarian history which should not be and will not be overstepped and that no compromises will be made about history. Karagenski said that the sides discussed various problems of the towns, achieving concrete results.
Sopot Mayor Deyan Doynov said that protesters gathered with the best of intentions to preserve Bulgarian history in order to raise the children in the patriotic traditions and spirit.

Kalofer Mayor Roumen Stoyanov thanked the Prime Minister for his prompt reaction on the issue of Bulgarian history.
