Checks Start whether Multinational Companies Offer Inferior-ingredients Foods in Bulgaria

Sofia, May 19 (BTA) - Sample taking starts on May 22 of some brand foods offered by multinational companies in Bulgaria and in the older member states of the EU, Agriculture and Food Minister Roumen Porozhanov said during Question Time in Parliament Friday, responding to an MP's question.

In early March the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland said they were starting a campaign aiming to prohibit the production of products of the same brand but of different quality depending on the target market.

Porozhanov said that a schedule has been drawn up for the taking of food samples which will continue until June 30. The decision for this was made by a working group of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) set up on March 13. The working group picked up the groups of foods and what characteristics will be checked.

The list includes five food groups: confectionery; soft drinks and fruit juices; dairy products; meat products; baby foods. The products are made in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Denmark, France, Italy and Austria.

Porozhanov said that the effective way to solve the problem with "the double standard" is to create integrated control EU-wide.
