PM Borissov Condoles over Victims of Portugal's Fires

Sofia, June 18 (BTA) - Prime Minister Boyko Borissov condoled with his Portuguese counterpart Antonio Costa over the loss of human lives in the huge forest fires raging across Portugal, the government information service said.

Borissov said: "Our hearts go out to the families of the victims and we wish those injured a quick recovery. On behalf of the Bulgarian government, I would like to assure you of Bulgaria's solidarity with the Portuguese people and of our readiness to provide support and assistance."

Eleven blazes have been reported so far, with areas north of Lisbon - Leiria, Santarem and Coimbra - being the worst hit. The situation is worst in Pedrogao Grande, Gois, Figueiro dos Vinhos and Ferreira do Zezere. The world news agencies have reported at least 62 people killed.

There have been no reports of Bulgarian casualties in the huge forest fires in central Portugal, the Foreign Ministry said Sunday.

The Foreign Ministry advises Bulgarians travelling to or staying in Portugal to avoid the affected regions. The Bulgarian Embassy in Lisbon is following the developments and is permanently in contact with the local authorities.
