Bulgaria
Wants A United Iraq

Sofia, June 9 (BTA) - "Bulgaria hasn't made any commitments to support an independence referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan. Bulgaria's formal positions is for a united Iraq," said Prime Minister Boyko Borissov during Parliament's Question Time on Friday. He was asked by socialist MP Elena Yoncheva about a meeting with Masoud Barzani, President of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.

The meeting took place at the end of May but the news wasn't broken to the media.

"My meeting with Barzani was part of an effort by Iraqi Kurdstan to present the idea for holding an independence referendum," said Borissov.

Asked by Yoncheva about Bulgaria's position Borissov said: "We haven't taken a stand. Barzani came to present the idea and we only listened to him." PK/PP
