Sixty percent of public companies in Bulgaria have women in their management bodies, according to a Bulgarian Stock Exchange (BSE) survey on the representation of women in business leadership positions. The survey, conducted on the occasion of International Women's Day (March 8), included over 300 Bulgarian companies listed on the Exchange, the BSE said on Monday.
The data show that nearly 40% of companies do not have women in their management bodies, 3% are run entirely by women on their boards, and 14% of companies have female CEOs.
The BSE said that it annually participates in the Ring the Bell for Gender Equality initiative of the World Federation of Exchanges, UN Women, and UN Global Compact. This year, the BSE has adopted the UN theme "For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment."
"For yet another year, the Bulgarian Stock Exchange supports the global equality initiative by highlighting positive trends in business. Our survey data confirms the steady rise of women in leadership positions in public companies. This is a clear sign that equality is not only possible but also brings real added value to business outcomes," BSE CEO Manyu Moravenov said, as quoted in the press release.
Moravenov spoke at a Ring the Bell for Gender Equality event alongside Darinka Georgieva, Executive Director at Global Compact Network Bulgaria, and Maya Doneva of the European Women's Lobby, the largest network of women's organizations in the EU. Doneva is also the founder of the #be_disappointing campaign, which aims to combat discrimination and gender pay inequality, the BSE said.
