In the second half of 2025, gross indigenous production (GIP) of bovine animals in the EU is expected to reach over 12.1 million head. This would correspond to an increase of 2.1% compared to the same period in 2024, when 11.9 million head were produced, according to the latest forecast data from the European statistics agency Eurostat released on Monday.

For the whole of 2025, Eurostat projects cattle GIP in the EU to amount to more than 23.8 million head, or 0.7% more than in 2024. Compared to EU production in 2015, this would represent a decline of 3.2%.

Gross indigenous production (GIP) is the number of animals slaughtered plus the balance of intra-Community and external trade for the same kind of live animals. GIP is thus the number of animals from an EU country (indigenous) apparently (gross) slaughtered or exported alive.

In Bulgaria, the GIP of bovine animals will reach 190,000 head this year, Eurostat forecasts. Compared to last year (202,340 head), this corresponds to a decrease of 6.5%.

However, over a ten-year period, compared to 2015 (138,000 head), Bulgarian GIP of cattle is growing by 37.7%.
