In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Bulgarian MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk (MRF/Renew Europe) wrote that every time he has been elected to high positions in Europe, that has been a success for Bulgaria and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF). Earlier in the day, it transpired that he has been elected Chairman of the European Parliament's Committee on Legal Affairs (JURI).

Kyuchyuk is one of four Bulgarian MEPs to join the leadership of the committees of the European Parliament, show announcements of the institution following the formation of the new parliamentary committees.

"I want to dedicate this success to everyone who in the last weeks were subjected to repressions, to extraordinary pressure, to those who endured unheard-of pressure on their families. Here, I will quote our leader [MRF Honorary Chairman] Dr Dogan: 'The only way to free yourselves from fear is to march against it!'" Kyuchyuk wrote on Facebook. He called on everyone to march against fear together.

Approached for comment on Kyuchyuk's election, Renew Europe Group Spokesperson Clara de Melo Ponce told BTA: "We celebrate the election by acclamation of Mr Kyuchyuk as Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs in the European Parliament. The Rule of Law is a core priority of liberals and we are sure that it will be personally for Mr Kyuchyuk leading this committee."
