The partial state of disaster in Varna, on the Black Sea, which was imposed on April 1, 2025, to facilitate a clean-up of a fuel oil slick that washed up on the Varna shore has been lifted, the Varna Regional Administration said in a press release on Friday. The decision followed the last inspection of the beaches in the city, carried out by an interdepartmental committee. The crisis management committee, with the participation of all competent institutions, was appointed by Regional Governor Andriana Andreeva.
The last inspection found that the bags with the collected waste have been removed and the sea water is not polluted.
These results give reason enough to the crisis management committee to end the state of disaster and as of 17:00 on April 4, 2025, the state of disaster has been lifted.
Maritime Administration completed an inspection of the ships in the area, but the perpetrator of the pollution has not been identified. The findings of the specialists will be handed over to the Economic Police department.
The Black Sea Basin Directorate and the Environmental Inspectorate in Varna will also send the results of their inspections to the prosecution service and the Economic Police department.
