The Bulgarian Consul General in New York Angel Angelov and the representative of the Ministry of Interior at the Bulgarian Embassy in Washington Ivaylo Genkov attended charity boxing matches at the invitation of Matthew Bogdanos, Chief of the Antiquities Trafficking Unit at the New York County District Attorney's Office, the Bulgarian Consulate General in New York said on its Facebook page on Friday.
The charity's annual event took place in Manhattan's historic district next to the New York Stock Exchange and is known as the Battle of the Barristers. In the 15 years since its initiation, it has raised nearly USD 2 million for various charitable causes, Bulgaria's diplomatic mission informed.
The 22 boxers participating in this year's event are lawyers who have undergone boxing training to help raise funds for those in need, this year for veterans of the US Armed Forces.
Bogdanos is a partner of Bulgaria and has been instrumental in the return in 2022 by the US authorities to the Bulgarian state of an ancient helmet dating from the 4th-3rd century BC. It is made of iron, silver, bronze and organic materials, and its origins are in Bulgaria near the modern day's village of Pletena, Southwestern Bulgaria.
