On April 4, 2001, former Bulgarian King Simeon II arrived in Bulgaria. Having lived in exile in Spain and Switzerland since the abolition of the monarchy in 1946, Simeon announced his intention to settle permanently in this country. His return marked a significant moment in Bulgarian history, drawing widespread attention and speculation. The former monarch’s decision to come back was seen as a symbolic event, reflecting both his personal connection to Bulgaria and the evolving political landscape.

Shortly after his return, Simeon established the National Movement Simeon II (NDSV), a political party that quickly gained significant public support, largely due to his royal status and promises of reforms, including addressing economic challenges, corruption, and social issues.

In the 2001 parliamentary elections, NDSV gained a majority and Simeon was elected Prime Minister of Bulgaria. His political success was remarkable, considering his rapid transition from a monarch in exile to a democratic leader. Simeon II's return and subsequent political rise were part of a broader wave of interest in former monarchs in Eastern Europe, although his tenure was also marked by both praise and criticism for the handling of Bulgaria's challenges in the post-communist era.

Following is the story as covered in the BTA English-language service on April 4, 2001:

Simeon II Arrives in Bulgaria

The last Bulgarian monarch Simeon II, who lives in Madrid, arrived in Sofia on Wednesday. Over the last few weeks the media associated his return with his entry into the political scene before the June 17 regular parliamentary elections.

Simeon II did not make a statement about his plans at the airport.

"Wait until Friday, you will hear interesting things," this was the king's reply to questions about his plans to participate in politics and his message to the people. He is expected to make a statement to the press at Vrana Palace on Friday.

"Thank you for coming, I am really moved," Simeon II said, addressing dozens of people who met him at Sofia Airport.

Asked to comment on the situation in Macedonia, Simeon II said: "This is their internal affair, it is very serious. There are people who are responsible for this."

Asked if the Bulgaria-NATO agreement is timely, Simeon II said that an agreement with NATO is always positive.

Dimiter Ivanov and Kamen Kostadinov of the Parliamentary Group for Dialogue and Partnership, and Andrei Kozhouharov and Kostadin Halachev of the leadership of the Kingdom of Bulgaria Federation were among the people gathered to meet the king. There were also representatives of other monarchist organizations.

The people shouted "Monarchy", "On the throne" and "Simeon".
