site.btaPresident Radev and King Abdullah II of Jordan Host High-Level Meeting of Aqaba Process in Sofia


President Rumen Radev and King Abdullah II of Jordan hosted the Aqaba Process for the Balkans III summit in Sofia, the President's press secretariat said on Friday. The event focused on security issues with an emphasis on Southeast Europe.
The Aqaba Process for the Balkans III Forum is a follow-up to previous meetings on the topic held under the initiative, in 2016 in Aqaba, Jordan and in 2018 in Tirana, Albania. The meeting in Sofia, co-chaired by Bulgaria and Jordan, analyzed the security architecture of the Balkans, regional mechanisms for information exchange, and coordinated efforts in combating illegal migration, terrorism, radicalization, and extremism, particularly in the context of challenges arising from military conflicts in neighboring regions. Discussions also addressed opportunities for cooperation to counter radicalization among young people and in the online space, as well as risks linked to the use of artificial intelligence.
During the forum, Radev also held bilateral meetings.
Attending the summit were the Chairperson of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Zeljka Cvijanovic, the President of North Macedonia, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic, Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar, Albanian President Bajram Begaj, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, Croatian President Zoran Milanovic, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Belgian Interior Minister Bernard Quintin, Italian Foreign Minister Maria Tripodi, Romanian Foreign Minister Ana Cristina Tinca, Hungary’s Special Representative for the Western Balkans, Zsolt Bunford, Norway’s Police Security Service Director Beate Gangas, France’s Representative for Special Envoy for Counter-Terrorism and Organized Crime International Strategy, Olivier Caron, the EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Bartjan Wegter, representatives from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Interpol, the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism, the Royal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought, and several ambassadors including those of Greece, Spain, Cyprus, the Netherlands, the US, and Japan.
The Aqaba Process meetings have been held since 2015 under the initiative of King Abdullah II of Jordan. Their goal is to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and expertise in an informal setting, fostering cooperation and coordination among countries, regional and international institutions, and civil society in the interest of global peace and security. Previous Aqaba Process meetings have focused on regions such as East Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, with previous forums hosted in collaboration with countries and organizations such as Indonesia, Albania, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Rwanda, the United States, the United Nations, Singapore, Spain, Norway, and Brazil.
