The main road between Sofia and Varna at the Ablanitsa road junction was closed for an hour on Monday by residents of villages in Lovech Region, protesting after six days of power outages caused by heavy snow just before Christmas. Among the protestors were village mayors.
The outraged protesters demanded that the problems with the electricity transmission network be solved and insisted that the local electricity distribution company should take full responsibility.
They said they have lost hope of celebrating New Year's Eve in lit and warm homes, and accuse the power distribution company of acting irresponsibly. The protesters also said that more investments and control over the electricity distribution companies are needed, as well as an increase in easements, so that there are no accidents on the 20 kV network.
Lovech Mayor Stratsimir Petkov said that the Municipality will file a collective claim against the electricity distribution company.
He noted that there are still power cuts in individual households in 12 settlements in the municipality.
