Residents of Lovech Municipality on Thursday protested in front of the electricity distribution company in the regional capital after being left without electricity for days during the holidays. They also filed complaints against the company, demanding compensation.
The protestors demanded that the quality of the electricity service be improved, that those responsible for the long power outages be punished, and some even thought the electricity distribution company should be nationalized.
Temenuzhka Zheleva from the village of Kakrina told BTA that they had no power supply from December 25 to December 28, and all year round the power is interrupted for 10-15 minutes, sometimes as often as three times a day.
"We wrote complaints, they came and changed only one cable," said Koicho Ivanov from the village of Gorno Pavlikeni.
"The authorities are unconcerned. The mayor and the lieutenant mayor did nothing. I had to grab the chainsaw and start cutting trees. During power outages we are left without water too," said Veselin Delchev from the village of Brestovo.
Radyuvene Mayor Ignat Ignev noted that thanks to the warmer weather, it took six or seven days to restore electricity service in all villages, but he criticized the five-day period for filing complaints, which is shorter than the latest power outage. There is the catch that the time without electricity service must be specified in the complaint.
Lovech Mayor Stratsimir Petkov joined the protest, stating that he expects a response to a complaint he submitted on December 31 to state institutions. He said that for now there are individual households that are still without power.
