Varna officially joined the B40 Balkan Cities Network, which unites local authorities in the Balkans to promote cooperation, sustainable development and innovation, the municipal administration said on Friday.

Varna's bid was submitted by Mayor Blagomir Kotsev. It was backed by the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria (NAMRB), which has had observer status in the network since 2024.

Kotsev expressed confidence that Varna's membership in the network will lead to stronger cooperation with Balkan partners in various fields. "As Varna Mayor, I am glad that the sea capital has joined the international association of Balkan cities that work together to promote peace and stability in the region. I am convinced that with joint efforts we will work together to strengthen the B40 network as a platform for cooperation, innovation and growth in the Balkans," he said.

Cities in the B40 Balkan Cities Network have the opportunity to exchange experience and good practices with over 70 member cities and to participate in regional projects aimed at improving the urban environment, digital transformation and sustainable development. As part of the network, Varna will actively participate in the B40 working groups, which focus on key topics such as local economy and cultural cooperation, smart cities and digital transformation, local democracy and migration, as well as regional climate action.

Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev, who holds the rotating presidency of the B40 Balkan Cities Network at the moment, congratulated Varna on joining, emphasizing the importance of the platform for strengthening partnerships between Balkan cities. He pointed out that every effort made within the network will have a positive impact on the cities of the Balkans and their residents.

The B40 Balkan Cities Network was established in 2021 in Istanbul with the aim to unite local authorities in the region. Among its main goals are the promotion of democratic governance, economic development, cultural exchange and sustainable urban development.
