A cyber security directorate has been established by decree of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The decree was published in the State Gazette and has already come into force.

The new directorate will be part of the Presidential Institution, will have a special budget and will be based in the capital Ankara, the Haberturk newspaper reported.

Its activities are expected to include policies, strategies and targets for action on ensuring cyber security, carrying out legislative studies and coordinating with other institutions. The directorate will also deal with raising awareness, training personnel on cyber security, information security, as well as implementing projects to increase cooperation between the private sector and universities.

Emphasis is placed on developing local and national products and research and development technologies for the cybersecurity ecosystem, with the goal of making local entrepreneurs competitive in global markets. The new directorate is expected to carry out R&D and technology transfer in cybersecurity related areas as well as for emergency and crisis management.

The Cyber Security Directorate system includes departments for cyber defence, cyber resilience, ecosystem development, international relations and media and public relations. It states that the institution will have the authority to open offices at home and abroad, subject to presidential approval.

The new directorate will employ 135 people.
