The European People's Party (EPP) wants to see Bulgaria and Romania in Schengen as fast as possible, EPP President Manfred Webber told the opening news conference of the EPP Congress here on Wednesday. Asked to comment on a statement by Austrian conservatives that they do not want to support the elections manifesto of the Congress partially due to Schengen, Weber said that there currently is an Austrian challenge and that all Austrian parties should be united for Bulgaria and Romania in Schengen.
Weber expressed the hope that support for full accession to Schengen will be received within the Congress in Bucharest.
The President of Romania's National Liberal Party, Nicolae Ciuca, said that his country will join Schengen by air and sea on March 31, but the Romanian diaspora living and working abroad hopes the country will join the border-free area by land as well. He hopes that will happen as soon as possible. In his words, he has already discussed the topic with Weber, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and has obtained their full support.
