Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev held talks with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs press service said on Thursday.
The two discussed the strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the US, focusing on key steps to deepen cooperation in defence and nuclear energy. Georgiev highlighted achievements in the modernisation of Bulgaria’s armed forces in partnership with the US, including the purchase of F-16 Block 70 fighter jets, the first of which landed in Bulgaria on Wednesday. He also emphasized ongoing projects for the acquisition of Stryker infantry fighting vehicles and Javelin anti-tank missiles.
Georgiev and Rubio examined the strategic importance of Bulgaria’s agreement with the American company Westinghouse to diversify nuclear fuel for the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant. They agreed that further collaboration in defence and energy remains a priority both in the bilateral agenda and within NATO. Georgiev and Rubio confirmed they would continue their dialogue, including through a visit by Georgiev to Washington, the ministry press service said.
