Only residential, training, and sports facilities will be built at the site designated for a NATO Multinational Battlegroup in the Kabile military area near Yambol, Southeast Bulgaria, Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov said on the sidelines of a hearing at the National Assembly on Friday.

All munitions will be stored in Bulgarian warehouses situated away from populated areas and military barracks. "There are no plans to store munitions or other hazardous materials," Zapryanov added.

Zapryanov explained that the brigade will include about 3,000 personnel and will have a barracks area close to the current one, using the training grounds of the units based in Kabile.

Regarding infrastructure funding, he mentioned that Bulgaria is in talks with the NATO Support and Procurement Agency. The project's cost will be determined after these negotiations.

Almost 3,000 signatures were submitted to the regional administration in March 2024, opposing the establishment of a NATO Multinational Battlegroup near Yambol.
