Varshets Municipality is building a pedestrian bridge and a car bridge over the Botunya River with funds from the Regional Development Ministry, but the funding has been suspended, the municipal administration in Varshets said on Wednesday.
The municipality has received an advance payment for the construction work, but it is unclear when the remainder will be available and when the project will be completed. "We hope to be able to complete both bridges soon, because local people need them very much," the municipality said.
A pedestrian bridge is already in place, complete with the approaches to it, and the pavement remains to be laid. Many people pass over the bridge every day, going to work in the industrial zone of Varshets. There is also a car and pedestrian bridge, which will be rebuilt as a reinforced concrete bridge. Work on it is yet to be completed.
During heavy rains in June 2022, the Botunya River overflowed, carrying away five bridges in Varshets, flooding the park and damaging some of the facilities in it. Varshets Municipality immediately inventoried the damage and asked the government for funding. Initially, BGN 150,000 were allocated for the design for the restoration of two bridges, which are most needed. The project for the construction of the bridges is worth over BGN 1 million.
