PM Asks His Education Minister to Step Down

Sofia, January 28 (BTA) - Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has asked that Education Minister Todor Tanev and his team come down amid systemic problems plaguing his Ministry and education in general, the government press office said Thursday.

It transpires from the government statement for the press that the Prime Minister has met earlier in the day with the leadership of the Reformist Bloc, the smaller partner in GERB's government coalition, which has nominated Tanev for the ministerial job, and asked them to propose a new team for the Education Ministry.

They have until the end of the day to propose a successor for Tanev to continue the reform which has begun in education.

"In my capacity as Prime Minister I find it inadmissible to make changes in education before putting them up for a broad public discussion," the Prime Minister reportedly said.

On the agenda of the public in the recent days have been controversial changes in the curricula for some subjects in Bulgarian schools.

Borissov is also quoted as thanking Tanev and his team for their work.
