Sofia, April 26 (BTA) - The new Foods Act increases eight-fold the sanction for using supplements, flavouring and solvents in food production, said here on Tuesday experts from the Agriculture and Food Ministry while presenting the new legislation.

The current sanction for using supplements and flavourings in foods is between 250 and 500 leva for natural persons and 500 to 1,000 leva for legal persons. The new Foods Act provides for a sanctions increase of 2,000 to 4,000 leva for natural persons and 4,000 to 6,000 leva for legal persons, said the Ministry.

New requirements are introduced for the sale of cooled and unpackaged meat in retail stores.

Special purpose foods and supplements, as well as foods designated for use during strenuous exercise, will be released on the market under regulated terms and conditions for the first time. A national council on foods under the Agriculture and Foods Minister is also established, which will coordinate the State policy in the foods sector.
