Environment Minister Talks with European Energy Commissioner
Sofia, May 27 (BTA) - Bulgaria's Environment and Water Minister Ivelina Vassileva and EU Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete met in Sofia on May 26 to discuss changes to EU legislation which are necessary for the implementation of the European Council's policy framework for climate and energy until 2030, the Environment and Water Ministry reported.
The framework stipulates a 40 per cent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the bloc by the year 2030 compared with 1990. According to the guidelines of the European Council, land use and forestry policies should be included in the framework.
Vassileva said Bulgaria attaches great importance to the possibilities for using the financial mechanisms established by climate action legislation along with those related to the Cohesion Fund.
In modernizing its energy sector, Bulgaria finds it essential that there should be derogation from the general rules in order to protect those sectors which are prone to carbon leakage, she said.
Earlier, Commissioner Canete talked with Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and President Rosen Plevneliev.
