Influenza has been detected by positive samples in a duck farm near the village of Stefanovo, the Dobrich directorate of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) said on Wednesday.

This is the first case in waterfowl and an outbreak declaration order has already been issued by the BFSA Executive Director. As required, three- and ten-kilometre zones have been designated and action has been taken to prevent the spread of the disease, the release added, reminding that waterfowl and fowl should not be kept together, and owners should keep the feed indoors. In the settlements falling within the two zones, a census and registration of private farms will be carried out.

At present, there are more than 11,000 birds on the farm, BFSA further informed. A burial ground was also discussed, and a disinfection point will be set up near the farm with diseased birds on Thursday, the release added.

Last week, two outbreaks of bird flu were declared in the territory of Donchevo village in farms keeping more than 300,000 hens.
