In the third quarter of 2024, the EU seasonally adjusted current account of the balance of payments recorded a surplus of EUR 106.0 billion (+2.4% of GDP), compared with a surplus of EUR 136.2 billion (+3.1% of GDP) in the second quarter of 2024 and a surplus of EUR 99.4 billion (+2.3% of GDP) in the third quarter of 2023, according to estimates released by Eurostat on Monday. For Bulgaria, the European Union's statistical office reports a surplus of BGN 1.6 billion in the current account balance (neither calendar nor seasonally adjusted), compared to EUR 400 million in July-September 2023.
The highest surplus was observed in Germany (plus EUR 53.8 billion) and the largest deficit, in Romania (minus EUR 9.0 billion).
In the third quarter of 2024 compared to the previous quarter, seasonally adjusted data show a decrease of the surplus of the goods account to EUR 86.2 billion from EUR 99.9 billion, and of the services account to EUR 35.7 billion from EUR 54.8 billion. The surplus of the primary income account increased (plus EUR 10.9 billion compared to plus EUR 10.1 billion), while the deficit of the secondary income account decreased (minus EUR 26.7 billion compared to minus EUR 28.6 billion). In addition, during the same period, the deficit of the capital account decreased (minus EUR 8.3 billion compared to minus EUR 9.3 billion).
