Bulgaria will present the project Pseudonature by architect Iassen Markov at Venice Architecture Biennale 2025, it was announced Monday at a press conference at the Sredets Gallery of the Ministry of Culture. The project scored 61 out of 70 points, according to architect Vladimir Milkov, chairman of the jury.

Selection Process

National participation in both the art and architecture biennales has now become regular and consistent, said Ekaterina Djumalieva, Director of the Cultural Heritage, Museums, and Visual Arts Directorate at the Ministry of Culture.

According to architect Vladimir Milkov, one of the strengths of this project is that the curatorial message is clear and concise, and the concept is easy to understand without requiring professional knowledge. The visual representation is simple and direct.

The Project

Pseudonature explores an absurd hypothesis where it snows in Venice during the summer. The project addresses serious issues such as climate change and human interference in complex natural processes, using strong imagery. A snow machine that covers solar panels, making them stop working, serves as a metaphor for humanity's inability to handle climate crises. The installation will also recreate a large winter cabin with an artificial fireplace and a carpet featuring elements of national culture.

The project will consist of two parts - an exterior and an interior, said Markov. He explained that architects look for problems and solutions, and this installation offers various messages that can be interpreted differently by each viewer.

This year will mark the 19th edition of the Venice Architecture Biennale, which will run from May 10 to November 23, 2025, with the theme “Intelligence: Natural, Artificial, Collective.”

Bulgaria's pavilion will again be located in the Titian Hall, where Bulgarian projects were previously displayed at the Architecture Biennale and the 60th edition of the Venice Art Biennale in 2024.
