site.btaUPDATED Sonya Yoncheva to Perform with Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras in Sofia Next Summer
Sonya Yoncheva will perform with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras in Sofia. The event will be on August 29, 2025 at St. Alexander Nevsky Square. It will be part of a series of three galas organized by the opera singer and her team.
"We have already talked about the repertoire, with the two of them the repertoire is always lavish," Yoncheva told the media on Monday.
The series of concerts will start two days earlier, on August 27, with a Viennese ball. “We have invited over 50 pairs of professional dancers. The entire square will turn into one huge stage,” explained Yoncheva. The event will feature music by Johann Strauss, whose 200th birthday anniversary will be celebrated in 2025.
The next gala will be on August 28, when the Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo will perform in Sofia. Yoncheva said that she invited her longtime friend and collaborator "to a special evening that will not only be about opera, but will also be dedicated to Italian music".
All concerts will feature the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Naiden Todorov.
Sofia Municipality Deputy Mayor for Culture Yana Genova noted that through projects like this Sofia gains international recognition as a place for culture, as a place where professionals in the field of art meet.
In addition to the galas in Sofia Yoncheva is planning two more concerts in Plovdiv. On June 16, 2025, she will perform film music dedicated to Bulgarian cinema. Two days later, on June 18, she will sing arias from Norma by the Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini.
Yoncheva also pointed out that the Bulgarian Artist magazine, published by her and her production company SY11 Events, will feature with Marta Petkova on the coversoon its third issue.
"The entire issue will be dedicated to ballet, contemporary dance, but also to major anniversaries. This year, Raina Kabaivanska will turn 90 in December, Aleksandrina Milcheva celebrated her 90th very recently. We had anniversaries of Pancho Vladigerov, of Dechko Uzunov. In general, it will be a very colourful issue," said the Editor-in-chief of Bulgarian Artist, Ivaylo Spasov.
On December 3, Yoncheva will take the stage at the Bulgaria Hall together with Scottish pianist Malcolm Martineau. The programme of the recital includes compositions by Verdi, Puccini, Tosti, Leoncavallo.
