Dependent as it is on European economies, Romania will be affected by the new tariffs announced by the administration of US President Donald Trump, Digi24 and ProTV reported on Thursday. The renaissance of American industry, as Trump calls it, has a price that Romania also pays, the two television stations noted.

Local producers will have to search for alternative markets, and many companies will restructure and reduce production. Many Romanian companies, especially in the western part of the country, producing auto parts, are already preparing for reduced demand and collective layoffs in June.

Car manufacturers will cancel orders, at least partially, since all components are produced by third countries, resulting in layoffs in June throughout the automotive industry, in eastern Europe, including Romania, economic analyst Octavian Dan told ProTV.

Romania's business with the United States is worth over EUR 3 billion annually. According to the National Institute of Statistics, in 2024 the country exported goods worth EUR 2.11 billion to America. As for imports from the US to Romania, the figures reach EUR 1.2 billion.

From the US, Romania mainly imports weapons, and also helicopters and airplanes. The list also includes oil and liquid measuring devices. Romania exports steel, aluminium, tyres, consoles, radar equipment, aircraft parts, electric motors and auto parts to US.

After the UK and Turkiye, the US is Romania's third largest trading partner outside the EU. Romania's most important trade is with Germany, Italy, France and Hungary, whose economies are dependent on trade relations with the US.

On Wednesday, in a speech in the Rose Garden of the White House, US President Donald Trump announced sweeping "reciprocal tariffs" on countries around the world. The measure is intended to stimulate domestic American production, but at the same time it carries the risk of price increases and trade wars, world news agencies note.

The EU will face a 20% tariff on its imports to the United States, China 34% and India 26%. Other tariffs on larger importers and US trading partners include 25% on goods from South Korea, 24% on those from Japan and 32% on those from Taiwan. Imports from the United Kingdom will be taxed at 10%.
