Three mayors from the Razgrad region, who previously supported the camp of Democracy, Rights and Freedoms (DRF)-MRF leader Ahmed Dogan, the founder of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF), have switched allegiance to his former ally and now rival, MRF – New Beginning Leader Delyan Peevski, the press services of DRF-MRF and of MRF – New Beginning said here on Wednesday.
The mayors who changed sides are Belgin Shukri from Isperih, Alkin Nebi from Kubrat, and Ahter Veliev from Zavet.
In the October 27, 2024 elections, DRF-MRF was the leading political force in Razgrad, Northeastern Bulgaria, while MRF-New Beginning came fourth.
The MRF – New Beginning press service said the discussion focused on the importance of party unity to be fully committed to solving the problems of the people, the structures, and the representatives of MRF – New Beginning in local government in the Razgrad region.
DRF described the meeting as "yet another demonstration of the Peevski model in action." They said it was "a unilateral decision" by the mayors to join MRF – New Beginning, without decisions from the party structures.
DRF said the mayors' decision to switch camps in no way affects the clearly declared support of 18,000 people who voted in the last parliamentary elections for DRF with honorary chairman Dr. Ahmed Dogan.
The DRF called on those who met with Peevski to resign from their posts.
