Speaking at the opening of the 2nd National Scientific Conference on Environment of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) here on Tuesday, Environment and Water Minister Manol Genov said that in recent years, the world has faced increasingly serious challenges due to climate change. The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events - heat waves, heavy rains, floods, droughts - calls for even more research and reliable forecasts. "Your work is therefore essential for understanding these processes and for adapting society and the economy to them," he told the NIMH.

The 2nd National Scientific Conference on Environment takes place at the NIMH until March 20.

Genov went on to say that that the NIMH research provides invaluable data and analyses that are the basis for climate adaptation and sustainable development strategies. The NIMH is not only a key scientific institution in Bulgaria, but also a strategic partner of the Ministry of Environment and Water in efforts for sustainable management of natural resources, he added.

Also attending the conference's opening were Tatiana Sultanova, Deputy Chair of the parliamentary Committee on Environment and Water, and Prof. Rositsa Karamfilova, head of the NIMH Scientific Council  and Director of the Executive Environment Agency.
