The Council of Ministers on Wednesday adopted the 2023 Annual Report on the State and Development of Agriculture, analyzing the past year and containing projections for 2023, the Government Information Service said.

The agriculture, forestry and fisheries sector generated a gross value added (GVA) amounting to BGN 6.5 billion in 2022. In real terms, this GVA shrank by 4.4% from 2021 as a result of challenges posed by the war in Ukraine and the increased production costs. The sector contributed 4.3% of the total GVA generated by the national economy. Estimates for the first two quarters of 2023 show a GDP generated by agriculture that is less by 1.1% and 0.3% year on year, respectively, in real terms.

Yet again, 2022 saw a surplus in Bulgaria's farm trade, amounting to BGN 1.6 billion. The net export of farm products in the first half of 2023 is estimated at EUR 972,700, the top exports being grain, vegetable fats and oilseeds.

State aids for farmers amounted to BGN 981.1 million for 2022.

The report lists the priorities and objectives of Bulgaria's agricultural policy and the measures for their attainment in 2024.
