The Muslim holiday of Ramadan, which begins on Sunday, March 30, will last a total of nine days. This was announced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at a religious iftar dinner for workers at the Presidential Palace.
"As you know, the students' spring midterm vacation begins next week. The Monday and Tuesday of the midterm break coincide with the second and third days of Ramadan Bayram. We want our families to spend more time with their children and spend the holiday in peace and joy. To this end, the days after Bayram, namely April 2, 3 and 4, will be considered holidays for government and public sector employees. Adding the rest days, the holiday will be nine days" [i.e. from March 29 to April 6], Erdogan was quoted as saying by the Milliyet newspaper.
University lecturers are civil servants and as they will be on administrative leave, students will also be on vacation on April 2, 3 and 4.
Ramadan Bayram is one of the two major religious holidays in Islam.
The holiday is also popularly called Seker Bayram, because according to tradition, sweet treats are served on this day.
