BSP: Two-year Tenure of Borissov's Government Has Pushed Bulgaria Backwards

Sofia, January 21 (BTA) - The two-year tenure of the government of Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and the majority of the 43rd National Assembly have pushed Bulgaria backwards. This is the conclusion drawn at a meeting of the National Board of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), voiced by the party leader, Kornelia Ninova.

There is no statehood in the country, the poverty and the demographic crisis have been aggravating.

Making a brief review of the tenure during the past two years, Ninova said that GERB have come to power bidding reforms and low levels of the public debt. Only two years later, the net amount of the debt has increased up to 26,000 million leva. The direct investments have been reduced; public procurement contracts are awarded only to companies, close to the incumbents; the poverty line has increased by 25 per cent, Ninova said.

The BSP leader also criticised the performance in the education and agricultural sectors. Commenting on the foreign policy, she said that it has placed Bulgaria in a humiliating position on the international arena.

BSP does not give up the idea of a change of the flat tax, Ninova said further. She outlined her party's vision about a change oriented towards three groups of Bulgarian nationals - the poor, the middle class and the Bulgarians with high incomes.

According to Ninova, the change in Bulgaria is obligatory. She noted that the BSP has set the beginning of this change by nominating Rumen Radev and Iliana Yotova for president and vice president. "We are obliged to continue this change," she observed.

BSP wishes that Bulgaria be sovereign and that the Bulgarian governments do not trade in the national interests. Also, there should be universal rules for everyone. Bulgaria should be based on its roots and culture, she underscored.

The plenum is expected to propose a new Statute of BSP, which is to be approved at the party congress in February. The document is likely to envisage that the BSP members cannot serve as MPs for more than 12 years. However, this will not apply to the BSP Chair.
