The reason for the closure of the farmers' markets was that in 20 days there were seven outbreaks of avian influenza, or bird flu, in the country, said Minister of Agriculture and Food Kiril Vatev in Ruse, where he opened the specialised exhibition "Danube Fruit Growers" 2023.

In a short period of time, veterinarians managed to take over 300,000 samples and they turned out negative, the authorities have again freed the farmers' markets, and only the sale of live birds and poultry products remains under ban, the minister said.

Vatev also commented on the problems of grain farmers. "There are no grain imports from Ukraine as per customs official reports. There are imports of sunflower, which is the most sensitive for us and it enters as Romanian and we know it is Ukrainian, but there is no basis on which we can stop it. Nor can we prove that it is Ukrainian," Kiril Vatev said. He stressed that it is difficult to regulate the market administratively.

The Agriculture Minister was adamant that the official measures are respected and Ukraine does not officially import sunflower and grain to Bulgaria. "After November 30, quota mechanisms for imports should come in. Very recently we had an online meeting with the Ukrainian Minister of Agriculture and we agreed on November 30 to let him know which products we will need, and nothing beyond that list should be imported," Vatev said.
