The law is clear - the responsibility lies with the organizers and the Interior Ministry, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev wrote Friday on Facebook on the occasion of escalation of tension at Thursday's protest in front of the National Stadium Vasil Levski.

“I would like to clarify that when coordinating the protest with me, none of the responsible institutions gave any sign that provocations and problems were expected, he said. Terziev clarified that the mayor can stop the protest from taking place only when there’s such signals, information and expectations from the State Agency for National Security and the Sofia Regional Directorate to the Interior Ministry.

GERB leader Boyko Borissov said earlier on Friday that Terziev had allowed "football hooligans to gather".

“It pained me both as a citizen and as Sofia Mayor to see how everything around us is being destroyed, burned and broken deliberately", he commented.

“Already last night I ordered the area to be fully restored,” Terziev noted and explained that the emergency teams of the Sofia Municipality were on the ground all night and their employees did not go home to their families so they can take care of the damage. He pointed out that the restoration of the damage cost BGN 42,000.

More than 80 elements of the city's infrastructure have been damaged after the events that took place on Thursday - broken or burned pegs, containers and bins, flower boxes, bicycle stands, Terziev said, adding that a municipal police vehicle was also burned.

Sofia Municipality will ask the protest organizer to restore the damage to public infrastructure, the Mayor said.
