An exhibition of paintings by Vasil Stoilov (1904 – 1990) will be arranged in the capital’s Loran gallery from April 8 to May 8, the organizers said on Friday.

Art critic Anelia Nikolaeva noted that Stoilov’s broad artistic profile ranks him among the most gifted Bulgarian portraitists, adding however that Stoilov defined himself more as a landscape painter.

“Landscape organically enters the fabric of his creative nature from his first steps in painting and it is no coincidence that researchers focus mostly on the landscapes,” Nikolaeva said. She specified that the landscape also dominates the exhibition at the Loran Gallery, which has gathered a small part of the impressive work of Bulgaria's great watercolorist.

Vasil Stoilov was born in Sofia in 1904, where he graduated from the National Academy of Arts. Between 1928-1932 he lived in Paris, where he painted portraits and participated in exhibitions such as the Salon d'Automne, the Figaro Gallery, the Henri Manuel Gallery in Montmartre, and many more. He organized his first solo exhibition in Bulgaria in 1932 in Sofia. In 1958, he became a professor of fine arts. He died in Sofia on February 13, 1990.
