A conference of teachers of Swedish in Eastern Europe is organized at the Rector's Office of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", the press centre of the university said on Friday.

Guests from universities in Austria, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Croatia will present papers on topics related to teaching Swedish abroad, with the aim of exchanging experiences and developing cooperation in this area at inter-university level.

The event was opened by the Vice Rector of Sofia University, Prof. Madeleine Danova. She commended the upward development of the Scandinavian studies programme over the years, the achievements of its lecturers, and the great interest of the prospective students in the programme. Prof. Danova thanked for the support of the Swedish Institute and drew attention to the benefits of cooperation. She expressed her confidence that the next two days of the conference will show all participants that sharing experience and knowledge is the most important thing in the field of science.

The event continued with the presentation of the conference papers.

The Swedish Institute is a state institution of the Kingdom of Sweden, successor to the Cultural Council established in 1935. From 1945 to the present day, its main task has been to disseminate information about Sweden's culture and literature beyond its borders. Sofia University’s Department of German and Scandinavian has been a partner of the Swedish Institute for many years, organizing conferences, seminars and meetings with Swedish writers, and appointing lecturers to support the teaching of Swedish as a first and second language in the department's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, the release said.
