Parliament Elects Meglena Kuneva Education and Science Minister

Sofia, February 3 (BTA) - Parliament Wednesday elected Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva for Education and Science Minister with 106 votes in favour, 66 against and 31 abstentions.

Prior to Kuneva' election, the National Assembly relieved Todor Tanev from his duties as Education Minister.

On Monday, Tanev submitted his resignation. The resignation came four days after Prime Minister Boyko Borissov asked him to come down amid systemic problems plaguing his ministry and education in general. Kuneva was nominated by the Reformist Bloc last Friday to replace Tanev.

Prior to Wednesday's vote in Parliament, ABV leader Georgi Purvanov said that his party wants Kuneva's nomination for Education Minister to be withdrawn, as late for this move as it may be. According to ABV, Kuneva is not sufficiently prepared for the post, does not have society's high level of trust and her concept contains shortcomings. The party is also discontented with the fact that it has not been informed of the nomination, Purvanov said.
