Sofia Airport Handles nearly 5 Mln Passengers in 2016

Sofia, January 5 (BTA) - Sofia Airport reported a record-large number of passengers handled in 2016, at 4,980,387 they are 22 per cent more than in 2015. More than 2.3 million passengers went through Terminal 1 and more than 2.6 million were handled at Terminal 2.

Regular international flights accounted for 95 per cent of all passengers, 3 per cent took domestic flights, and 2 per cent took charter flights.

Compared to 2015, the increase was largest at 24 per cent for regular international flights, above all due to 23 newly launched services, the biggest number in any single year.

Regular scheduled flights were provided for over 70 destinations by 24 air carriers. The top five airlines - Wizz Air, Bulgaria Air, Ryanair, Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines - carried 3.5-plus million passengers from/to Sofia Airport, 71 per cent of the annual passenger flow. London, Vienna and Frankfurt were the top three destinations in 2016.

A total of 51,829 planes took off and touched down in Sofia, up 17 per cent on 2015 The airport handled 21,157 tonnes of cargo and postal shipments, 14 per cent more than the previous year.

The last quarter of 2016 set a record with 1,380,813 passengers and 13,670 takeoffs and landings.
