New Interior Minister Visits Bulgarian-Turkish Border
Sofia, January 28 (BTA) - The caretaker Minister of Interior, Plamen Ouzounov, visited the Lessovo checkpoint at the Bulgarian-Turkish border on Saturday, just a day after he and the other members of Bulgaria's interim government took office.
Ouzounov was updated on how border controls work. The leaders of the checkpoint told him about the current condition of the border fence. The minister asked for details about the exact position of the fence.
He got acquainted with the available technology for discovering illegal migrants hiding in vehicles and the expert assistance provided by the local Frontex contact point to intercept stolen vehicles, detect fake identity documents and share operative information.
Ouzounov met with a joint border team that includes Dutch police officers working at Lessovo within the system of the European Border and Coast Guard.
The Interior Minister also paid a surprise visit to the Regional Directorate of the Border Police in Elhovo, not far from the Turkish border. He wanted to make sure that the border is being protected effectively and to meet personally with the professionals tasked with this obligation.
He reviewed the working conditions of the Border Police officers and the equipment they have at their disposal.
