National Audit Office Detects Lv 1 Mln in Tax Liabilities over 10 Years

Sofia, October 17 (BTA) - Over the last ten years, the Bulgarian National Audit Office (BNAO) has checked over 77,200 declarations disclosing financial interests of senior public officials. As a result of the alerts submitted by the BNAO to the National Revenue Agency and the State Agency for National Security, tax liabilities approximating 1 million leva have been established, the Office said in a press release on Monday.

The checks, however, have covered nearly double the number of persons because the spouses and minor children of senior public officials are also subject to a check.

During the checks, more than 2,200 findings of discrepancies have been made, and omissions tend downward thanks to the control on the part of the Audit Office.

The figures cover the ten-year period since the introduction of the public electronic register and checks of disclosure declarations under the Act on Public Disclosure of the Financial Interests of Senior Public Officials and Other Office Holders.

BNAO's achievements have been highly appreciated by the Council of Europe Group of States against Corruption (GRECO). Within its Fourth Evaluation Round, GRECO has drawn up an Evaluation Report on Bulgaria entitled "Corruption prevention in respect of members of parliament, judges and prosecutors."
