PM Borissov on EU Border Defence Support for Bulgaria at  EPP Maastricht Summit

Brussels/Maastricht, October 20 (BTA Correspondent Nikolay Jeliazkov) - "I want to thank all colleagues from the European People's Party (EPP) and the European Council that after the meeting in Bratislava they showed that the European Commission, the Council and all of us can make fast decisions," Prime Minister Boyko Borissov told journalists in Maastricht (the Netherlands) upon his arrival there on Thursday. Borissov is participating in the EPP summit in Maastricht.

Borissov thinks that the correct solutions have finally been found after many arguments and debates - that external borders should be closed, as well as the Balkan route, that everything should happen through the official border checkpoints and that an extension of the agreement with Turkey should be worked upon. European border police begins from Bulgaria, he noted.

At the moment, Bulgaria is an exceedingly reliable external, Schengen border of the EU, Borissov said. The funds provided by the EU for border security are much less than what Bulgaria has spent so far on equipment and defence facilities. "These funds are regarded rather as moral support and proof that the EU can be flexible, fast and effective, for which I express gratitude to European Commission President Jean-Claude JUNCKER and all other colleagues," The Bulgarian Prime Minister said.
