Production of staple field crops, vegetables and fruits in the country grew in 2024, according to data of the agricultural statistics department with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, cited by the Ministry.

In the 2023/2024 year, Bulgaria produced 6,846,000 tonnes of wheat, with an average yield of 5,730 kg/ha, and 1,053,000 tonnes of barley, with an average yield of 5,360 kg/ha. 

Areas used for vegetable production totalled 35,600 ha. Fields under vegetables were 34,300 ha and greenhouses covered 1,216 ha. Total vegetable production for 2024 was 646,000 tonnes, of which 110,000 tonnes was greenhouse production. The largest quantities were tomatoes – 128,000 tonnes, watermelons – 123,000 tonnes, potatoes – 114,000 tonnes, peppers – 57,000 tonnes and cucumbers – 51,000 tonnes.

Areas under fruit, nuts and berries amounted to 59,600 ha. The quantity of fruit produced was 204,900 tonnes. There was an increase of 10% in cultivated areas compared with 2023. Cherry plantations accounted for the largest share at - 23%. Total fruit harvested in 2024 was 204,913 tonnes, up 14% on the previous year. The Southeast (26%) and the South Central (24%) regions lead in fruit production.
