The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) has asked the National Academy of Art to design a custom typeface, which will bear BTA’s name, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev said here Tuesday. He was among the speakers at a journalism forum titled "Philology and Journalism: Together for Language" taking place in Sofia University Tuesday.
According to Valchev, the new font will be used across various platforms, including the BTA website, its LIK magazine for art and culture, official documents, business cards, and even the sign on BTA rooftop, creating a harmonized visual identity.
The BTA Director General accepted an award on behalf of BTA for its commitment to the Bulgarian language and its high language standards. He emphasized that with the new font, BTA is taking another step in its mission to use the Bulgarian language in the best possible way.
Valchev explained that for BTA, the correct use of the Bulgarian language is a law, as the BTA Act, adopted in 2011 based on a constitutional provision, specifically states that one of the core BTA principles is the protection and promotion of the Bulgarian literary language. He added that this responsibility extends beyond Bulgaria, as BTA is also tasked with promoting Bulgarian organizations abroad that work to preserve and develop the Bulgarian language tradition.
He further pointed out that BTA has very detailed rules regarding language use. Whenever new words appear, they must check the correct spelling in Bulgarian. All departments and editorial offices are required to adopt this writing standard, making BTA “a model for all Bulgarian media”, said Valchev.
Among the attendees are Parliament Chair Nataliya Kiselova, Sofia University Rector Prof. Georgi Valchev, faculty, students and journalists.
