Thursday's parliamentarian session began with a declaration on behalf of the BSP-United Left in support of the boycott of supermarkets by consumers on February 13 due to high prices. The declaration was presented by MP Nina Dimitrova, and the document states that the formation has submitted a bill on the ceiling of surcharges on basic food products. With this bill we are protecting the Bulgarian consumer, the Bulgarian producer and social justice, the declaration said.
MPs are due to hear representatives of the executive on the issue of regulated water supply from the Arda River to Greece in connection with the needs of Greek farmers. Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, as well as cabinet ministers, will answer MPs' questions.
"The BSP-United Left parliamentary group strongly supports today's boycott of shopping in big grocery stores and together with thousands of citizens we stand up for social justice", said MP Nina Dimitrova. "Bulgarian citizens, supported by a number of organizations, are uniting today in protest against the unprecedented rise in the price of basic food products", she added.
"Today we do not buy" - this is not just an act of protest, but a powerful message to all those who abuse the trust of Bulgarian citizens and exploit them with exorbitant prices and unjustified mark-ups", Dimitrova said.
"Today Bulgarian families, workers, pensioners, farmers and small producers are standing up against greed", BSP - United Left's declaration reads. "We believe that today the Bulgarian people will show that they will no longer tolerate the brazen pricing policy of the big retail chains that sell eggs, milk, butter and cheese at exorbitant prices, while the common man counts pennies for his daily necessities".
Dimitrova noted that the BSP - United Left is proposing a bill to cap surcharges on basic food products. In her words, this is not an attack on business, but a measure against price manipulation. She said that next week the BSP - United Left will organize a roundtable with Bulgarian food producers and processors to discuss concrete measures on how the state can support them against unfair trade practices of big chains.
