Bulgaria's accession to Schengen is a great success for our country, for which a number of governments worked, GERB leader Boyko Borissov said in a Facebook post Thursday.

He also said that Bulgaria met the criteria for full Schengen entry "a long time ago". "The free movement of people, goods and capital is one of the main pillars of economic and political cooperation within the European Union," Borissov added.

The Council of the EU decided that checks at the land borders of the Schengen area will be lifted for Bulgaria and Romania from January 1, 2025.
