A total of undeclared USD 87,580, the equivalent of BGN 156,202, was seized during a customs inspection at Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint on August 6. The undeclared foreign currency was found on passengers on a bus travelling from Ukraine to Turkiye via Bulgaria, Svilengrad Customs' press centre reported.

On August 6, a bus with Turkish registration arrived at the checkpoint with 32 passengers onboard travelling from Ukraine to Turkiye. They all said they were not carrying any cash to declare. During a personal inspection of one of the female passengers, a Ukrainian citizen, numerous banknotes of US dollars and a cast of square-shaped yellow metal were found in her elastic waist belt with pockets. The found undeclared currency amounted to USD 57,580 with an equivalent of BGN 102,696. According to an expert's report, the 396.70 grams of metal found were made of 14-carat gold.

Another passenger on the bus, also a Ukrainian citizen, attempted to smuggle USD 30,000, which is equivalent to BGN 53,506. The customs officers found the undeclared currency in her travel bag.

Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in the case by a customs investigator under the supervision of the District Prosecutor's Office in Haskovo.
